Tragic Shooting: Former Speaker Melissa Hortman and Husband Killed, Senator John Hoffman and Spouse Injured

Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, tragically lost their lives in a shooting at their home in Brooklyn Park on Saturday. Minnesota’s Governor, Tim Walz, described it as a “politically motivated assassination,” highlighting the severity of the incident.

In another disturbing turn, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times at their home in Champlin around the same time. Reports indicate they each suffered five or six gunshot wounds. They are currently undergoing surgery at Mercy Hospital with a cautious optimism about their recovery.

“There’s a significant loss for our state,” Governor Walz said during a news conference. He honored Hortman’s dedication to Minnesota, calling her a “formidable public servant” and a friend who worked tirelessly to improve the state.

Investigators revealed that the gunman posed as a police officer. A manhunt is underway as local authorities continue to search for the suspect, with many residents in Brooklyn Park under orders to stay indoors.

The first shooting was reported at Hoffman’s residence around 2 a.m., while the incident at Hortman’s home occurred shortly thereafter. Police were already checking on Hortman’s home due to its proximity to Hoffman’s when they encountered the shooter. An immediate gunfight ensued, but the shooter managed to escape.

Hortman, who represented Minnesota since 2004 and served as House Speaker from 2019 to 2025, is survived by her two children. The current Speaker, GOP Rep. Lisa Demuth, expressed her grief, condemning the act and calling for prayers for both victims and law enforcement involved.

In a broader context, the political landscape in Minnesota is feeling a ripple effect from this violence. Recent surveys show a rising concern among citizens regarding safety, particularly in relation to public officials. This incident resonates with a growing trend of violence against lawmakers in the U.S., raising alarms about the safety of those who serve the public.

As the investigation unfolds, local law enforcement, with support from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, continues to work actively on the case.
