WVU Cuts Ties with Sodexo: What This Means for Students and Campus Dining

MORGANTOWN — There’s a big change coming for West Virginia University. The WVU Board of Governors decided to end its contract with Sodexo, a major food service company, due to ongoing issues.

Sodexo must leave by June 29. The university is preparing for a one-year agreement with a new vendor set to start around June 30, although they haven’t disclosed who it is yet.

Recently, job ads appeared for Aladdin Campus Dining, seeking staff to help support their operations at WVU. This points to a possible shift in food services for students.

WVU initially hired Sodexo in 2018 with a 15-year contract, expecting reliable service until 2033. However, dissatisfaction grew over time. Even after extending the contract in May 2021 due to COVID-19 disruptions, complaints about food quality and service continued.

Stephanie Taylor, WVU’s Vice President and General Counsel, expressed frustration during a board meeting, pointing out that Sodexo has not met its contractual obligations. The list of complaints included:

  • Poor food quality and service
  • Not maintaining hygiene and cleanliness
  • Failing to meet dietary needs for students
  • Improper charges and financial mismanagement

These issues led to months of discussions and attempts to resolve the problems, but most efforts were unsuccessful. As a result, WVU started a formal dispute process with Sodexo back in November.

Food service quality is crucial for students’ satisfaction. In a 2021 national survey, 67% of students reported that food quality affects their overall college experience. It’s clear that the right services can enhance student life significantly. With WVU now seeking new providers, it hopes to better meet the needs and expectations of its students.

As universities across the nation reevaluate their food services, WVU’s situation highlights a broader trend. Many institutions are moving away from long-term contracts with big companies in favor of more flexible, locally sourced options that prioritize quality and student satisfaction.
