‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Soars to Over 0M Worldwide Debut at the International Box Office!

Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon is making waves at the box office, projected to debut with over $200 million globally. This figure is higher than earlier estimates. So far, the film has brought in about $54.9 million internationally, with $29.1 million from previews.

This impressive start would place it among the year’s top openings, ranking fourth worldwide, just behind A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and China’s Ne Zha 2. Among live-action remakes, it could snag the seventh spot, following hits like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

Directed by Dean DeBlois, HTTYD has launched in 81 international markets, with an estimated earning of $117.7 million this weekend. This would rank it as the fourth biggest international opener for Hollywood films this year, behind Lilo, Minecraft, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

In specific markets, HTTYD is seeing strong numbers. In Mexico, the film took in $2.3 million on Friday, for a total of $4.4 million. It’s leading the market with a 68% share.

The UK and Ireland contributed $4.8 million through Friday, mostly from previews. China also made a splash, launching on 35,000 screens with $2.3 million on its first day, capturing a 44% market share. This set a record for the biggest opening day for a live-action adaptation in five years, scoring a solid 9.5 on Maoyan.

Brazil reported $689,000 on Friday, bringing its total to $4.9 million, while Korea reached an impressive $5.3 million, quickly surpassing The Little Mermaid and other local competitors.

Other notable markets include France ($2.8 million), Germany ($2.4 million), Australia ($1.5 million), and Spain ($2 million).

The success of HTTYD suggests a growing trend of animated films transitioning into live-action. Recent data shows that live-action remakes have been a crucial part of Universal’s box office strategy, drawing in family audiences worldwide.

As we await further updates, it’s clear that this film is not just riding on nostalgia but is also connecting with new audiences.
