Empowering 50,000 Youths: How GreenHubAfrica Champions Climate-Smart Innovation

The GreenHubAfrica Foundation has launched the Climate Action SuperHeroes (CASH) Youth Network, aiming to empower 50,000 young innovators in climate-smart practices and circular economy businesses. This initiative was announced during the 2025 World Environment Day (WEDex) celebration in Abuja.

Mr. Henry Bassey, the CEO of the foundation, emphasized the organization’s mission to create a greener, more sustainable continent. He highlighted the vast employment potential within the waste management sector and how engaging youth can lead to significant economic benefits.

WEDex initially began as a virtual gathering during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Now, it has evolved into an influential movement, serving as a platform for discussions, webinars, and podcasts focused on tangible climate action. Bassey noted that WEDex 2025 marks a significant milestone since the pandemic, transitioning from online events to in-person high-level engagements.

Dr. Efegbidiki Okobia, president of the Nigerian Environmental Society, discussed pressing issues like plastic pollution, which ranks as a major waste management challenge in Nigeria. He urged collaboration among the private sector, government, and civil society to tackle this problem effectively. For instance, separating waste is crucial, but questions remain about where recycled materials go. Establishing efficient systems to manage waste can help close these gaps.

World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5, with the 2025 theme being “Beat Plastic Pollution.” This focus underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment. Recent statistics show that plastic waste production is set to double in the next 20 years, making discussions like those at WEDex all the more critical.
