An Emotional Championship End for University’s Baseball Team

On June 14, Robert McNerney, the head coach for University’s baseball team, stood with tears in his eyes as he watched his team lose the Division III state championship. The team fell to Licking Valley, 1-0, in a game that left bitter memories.

The loss was tough, not just because of the score, but because ten players were saying goodbye to their high school careers on that field. “One of our themes is planting trees for which shade you won’t sit in,” McNerney said, reflecting on how this group left the program in a better position than they found it.

The Preppers finished the season with a record of 26-7, setting a new program record. Unfortunately, a crucial error and a controversial call at home plate sealed their fate. In the fourth inning, a mistake allowed Licking Valley to score. Later, in the sixth, a close play at home plate left everyone questioning the umpire’s decision when Sal Prolizo was called out.

Cayden Zelenak had opened the sixth inning with a single, leading to Prolizo coming in as a pinch-runner. After some smart plays, Prolizo made a daring dash for home after the catcher’s throw went awry. “I thought I had it,” he recalled. “But there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Bellan, University’s pitcher, had an impressive performance, throwing four hits and striking out seven batters. Yet, an unearned run—caused by a bobbled exchange—was all it took to decide the game.

After the game, the team received silver medals, symbolizing their runner-up status. They gathered one last time, filled with memories and a shared sense of unity that transcended talent levels. Prolizo emphasized their bond, stating, “We might not be the most talented team in Ohio, but we are the closest team in the Midwest.”

In a recent survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations, 60% of high school coaches reported a growing emphasis on team culture and camaraderie. This suggests that the spirit of team dynamics is becoming as essential as raw talent.

Looking ahead, McNerney and his players will carry these lessons into the future. Perhaps this experience will serve as fuel for the next season, motivating them to aim for the championship once more.
