UN Strengthens Commitment to Nigeria’s Environmental Protection: Latest Insights from EnviroNews on Climate Change and Renewable Energy

The United Nations is stepping up its efforts to combat plastic pollution in Nigeria. Mr. Mohamed Fall, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, emphasized this commitment during a recent event in Abuja for World Environment Day. He noted that plastic pollution has reached a crisis level and called for urgent action to protect the environment.

During the campaign titled “Ending Plastic Pollution,” Fall pointed out that every piece of plastic waste harms our ecosystems. He stressed the dangers of microplastics, which are now contaminating food and impacting our health. The passing of a recent UN resolution aimed at controlling plastic pollution is seen as a historic advance in environmental protection.

Fall mentioned that the UN is partnering with local organizations to implement sustainable practices that could create jobs and stimulate economic growth. For instance, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) is working on inclusive models at both national and state levels, while the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is investing in environmentally friendly industrial solutions.

One key partnership highlighted was between the UN, Green Hub Africa, and the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES). Together, they aim to build global agreements to tackle plastic pollution. Fall remarked, "Ending plastic pollution is not just an environmental issue; it’s a fundamental human right tied to health and dignity."

Mr. Osu Otu from UNIDO also addressed the challenges posed by ineffective waste management. He revealed that plastics constitute 13% of all waste in Nigeria. Proper management of this waste could lead to job creation and attract investment.

Dr. Efegbidiki Okobia, the President of NES, discussed the ongoing need for better waste separation and disposal practices. He stated that the organization is focused on meaningful research and collaboration with responsible stakeholders to address these issues.
