Discover Flavor and Support: City Heights Street Food Festival Boosts Community Development

Hundreds of people flocked to City Heights for the 5th annual Street Food Festival on University Avenue. This vibrant event showcased local vendors, music, and delicious food—all while raising funds for community projects.

Organized by the City Heights Community Development Corporation, the festival aimed to collect $75,000 for vital programs. Kendyll Sepulveda, VP of Operations and People Success, highlighted the festival’s unique approach, saying, "We wanted something that truly represents who we are as an organization and celebrates our community."

The organization focuses on affordable housing, economic development, and eviction prevention. Sepulveda noted that the festival aims to bridge gaps in the community: "We want to celebrate while also raising money to support our operations."

Local vendors like Lori Nguyen of Riri’s Kitchen added flavor to the day with a mix of Asian and Hispanic cuisine. She expressed her desire for City Heights to thrive through events like this. "I want to create a space where the community can come together and celebrate," she said.

Attendees included families looking to enjoy time together and others eager to support small businesses. San Diego resident Samantha Martin shared, "My family pushes me to take part in these events. Without them, I wouldn’t be here, so I’m grateful."

The festival not only highlighted local talent but also demonstrated the community’s spirit. Events like this create lasting connections and promote a sense of belonging. According to recent surveys, nearly 70% of residents believe that community events enhance their quality of life, showcasing a growing appreciation for local culture.

As we look back on past festivals, it’s clear that these gatherings have evolved. They now serve as essential platforms for promoting unity, diversity, and economic growth. Such initiatives link today’s community building efforts to the historical fabric of City Heights, making it a stronger, more vibrant place to live.
