Unlocking Climate Solutions: What to Expect from the Upcoming Second Africa Climate Summit

Addis Ababa is gearing up for the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) on September 8-10, 2025. This event aims to spur action and funding for climate resilience in Africa. Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa, hails this summit as crucial for finding solutions to climate challenges.

The summit comes in response to a call from the recent African Union Summit, focusing on global solutions and financial support for Africa. Ethiopia’s selection as the host reflects its dedication to climate action and sustainable growth. Fitsum highlighted the country’s Climate-Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) Strategy, which has guided Ethiopia’s development plans since 2011.

Through initiatives like the Green Legacy Initiative, Ethiopia has achieved remarkable environmental results, planting over 40 billion trees from 2019 to 2023. Other projects are set to enhance renewable energy, promote electric mobility, and improve urban planning.

This summit is not just a talk fest; it’s a launchpad for practical solutions and investments. Approximately 25,000 participants, including heads of state, climate leaders, and experts, are expected to attend, showcasing nature-based solutions and attracting funding.

Moses Vilakati from the African Union stressed the urgency of the summit, given Africa’s vulnerability to climate change. Although the continent accounts for only 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it faces dire threats to food security, water resources, and public health. Current funding for climate change measures in Africa stands at just $30 billion, far short of the estimated $250 billion needed annually.

Vilakati called for innovative funding strategies and international collaboration to bridge this financial gap. “The summit is a platform for dialogue and action that will guide Africa toward a green, resilient future,” he stated.

In a world where climate impacts are becoming more severe, the insights from both Ethiopian leaders and regional experts at ACS2 will be vital. This summit offers an opportunity not just for speeches, but for real policies that can help communities adapt and thrive in the face of climate challenges.
