Recently, PETRONAS and Mercedes-Benz joined forces to launch the Blue Carbon Collective Project. This initiative, revealed at the Energy and Nature Forum 2025 in Kuala Lumpur on June 13, aims to safeguard Malaysia’s coastal ecosystems.

This project involves collaboration among several institutions, including the Faculty of Forestry and Environment at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), PETRONAS, Mercedes-Benz, and the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil. The focus will be on the Sungai Santi Forest Reserve in Johor, home to rich mangrove ecosystems.

The University of São Paulo brings valuable experience through its BlueShore Project, which aims to enhance carbon capture in coastal areas. This expertise will guide the team in assessing and restoring Johor’s mangrove forests.

Professor Azlizam Bin Aziz, the advisor for the project, shared its importance at the launch. He stated that efforts at Sungai Santi are crucial for protecting the planet. He thanked PETRONAS for their support and emphasized the role of UPM in advancing blue carbon initiatives.

Project leader Dr. Waseem Razzaq Khan highlighted the initiative’s significance for ecological restoration. He noted that the project aims to strengthen ecosystem resilience and tackle climate change using nature-based solutions. He also expressed gratitude for the support from PETRONAS, Mercedes-Benz, and the University of São Paulo.

This project showcases a strong commitment from both public and private sectors to combat climate change through research, cooperation, and sustainable practices.

Recent studies show that coastal ecosystems can sequester significantly more carbon than terrestrial forests, making their preservation all the more vital. As the urgency of climate action grows, projects like this one could play an essential role in shaping a sustainable future.
