West Virginia University has issued a warning for students after a black bear was spotted near campus. The university police alerted the community about the bear seen near the Personal Rapid Transit Central Maintenance Facility on Eighth Street on Monday. Police quickly responded, but the bear eluded them—though they did catch a glimpse of it on surveillance cameras.

What to Do If You Encounter a Black Bear

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) notes that black bears are typically not aggressive, and attacks are rare. Their activity changes based on food availability, peaking in May and June as they come out of hibernation. This time of year, they may venture closer to humans in search of easier meals.

If you spot a black bear before it notices you, remain calm and slowly back away. If the bear sees you, don’t run; this could prompt it to chase you. Instead, back away without turning your back to the bear.
