Helping Hungry Kids During Summer in Mercer County

Summer break has begun in Mercer County, but not all kids are ready for a carefree season. For some, the break brings worries about food. To help, the Mercer County Schools have launched the MCS Express, a no-cost food truck just for kids. This year, they’ve teamed up with the City of Bluefield to make it even better.

Krista Kessinger, the director of child nutrition for Mercer County Schools, emphasizes the importance of community support. “We teamed up with local organizations and first responders to create fun activities for kids,” she explains. The aim is not just to provide meals but also to make connections.

Kathrn Kandas, the City’s grants project manager, shares that the initiative is about more than food. She wants kids to see first responders as approachable resources, not just figures of authority. “We want them to know that these community helpers are friendly and here for them,” she adds. In addition to meals, the program encourages interactions with first responders and their K-9 partners.

The MCS Express initiative not only fills little bellies but also feeds minds. It keeps kids linked to Mercer County Schools throughout summer, introducing them to new resources and upcoming events. “It’s important for them to feel connected,” Kandas says.

Looking ahead, Kessinger is excited about more events. “We aim to make this summer the best one yet for our kids,” she states. Community collaboration is key, and more partners are eager to join in.

The food truck will visit various locations throughout June, with schedules available on the Mercer County Schools Facebook page and the City of Bluefield Facebook page.

Recent statistics show that food insecurity affects millions of children during the summer months when school meals are unavailable. According to the USDA, about 30 million kids rely on free or reduced-price school lunches. Programs like MCS Express are vital in fighting this issue and ensuring every child has access to nutritious meals.
