Join the Fun: Galway’s Inaugural Green Clubs Event Unites Community for Sustainability – Clare Echo

Galway County Council is teaming up with GAA, LGFA, and Camogie clubs for an exciting event called the Green Clubs event. It’s happening at Ballinderreen GAA Club on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 7:00 PM.

The Green Clubs Programme started in 2020. It’s designed to help local sports clubs take real steps toward fighting climate change. With backing from the Department of the Environment, Climate, and Communications, this initiative is crucial for our communities.

This upcoming evening will include expert speakers discussing important topics like energy efficiency, waste management, biodiversity, and funding opportunities. Clubs like Ballinderreen GAA Club and St. Brendan’s Club in Ballygar will share their success stories on sustainability projects.

Ballinderreen GAA has made some impressive changes, including setting up planter boxes for pollinators, installing solar panels, upgrading their community center windows, adding recycling bins, and even establishing a water fountain.

Cllr. Martina Kinane, Galway’s County Cathaoirleach, invites all clubs in Galway to attend. She emphasizes that this event is a chance to learn practical steps for making clubs more eco-friendly. By working together, clubs can lead in climate action for the benefit of everyone.

Denise Feeney, a representative from the Green Club Programme, explains that this event will highlight ways clubs can go green. Not only does this help reduce costs, but it also improves community well-being and supports the environment.

Speakers will include notable figures like Paul Bellew of Galway GAA and other experts from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and MyWaste.ie. They’ll provide valuable insights into the benefits of sustainable practices.

The evening wraps up with a Q&A session and a tour of the Ballinderreen GAA Green Club, where attendees can see these sustainability efforts in action.

Research shows that local communities actively engaging in sustainability can significantly lower their carbon footprints. As sports clubs increasingly adopt green initiatives, they can inspire their members and fans to do the same, creating a ripple effect in the community.
