The Colorado men’s basketball team is gearing up for an exciting trip. They will play against the Australian Boomers, Australia’s men’s national team, on July 31 at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre. This match is part of their foreign tour, running from July 23 to August 5.

The NCAA allows teams to conduct these trips every four years. The Buffaloes will play four exhibition games in total, with the first match now announced. Dates and opponents for the other games will be revealed soon.

This tour comes at a crucial time for Colorado, which has seven newcomers on its roster, including five freshmen ranked among the nation’s Top 40 by Rivals and 247Sports. This experience will be invaluable for these young players.

Fans in Australia will have a rare chance to see both NBA and NCAA stars on the same court as the Boomers prepare for the FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Colorado’s head coach, Tad Boyle, noted, “Australian basketball has a lot of national pride. When players wear the Boomers uniform, they play with heart.” He sees this matchup as a wonderful opportunity to challenge his team and improve.

The trend of Australian players joining NCAA programs has surged in recent years. As of the 2024-25 season, there are 232 Australians enrolled in men’s and women’s NCAA basketball programs, reflecting the growing connection between the two countries in sports.

Nate Tomlinson, a former Pac-12 champion and new addition to Colorado’s coaching staff, brings valuable experience. He competed for Australia at the 2009 World University Games and has played professionally for six seasons in the NBL.

Additionally, the Colorado women’s basketball team features two Australians, Tabitha Betson and Jade Crook, illustrating the strong ties between Australian talent and Colorado.

The Gold Coast, known for hosting world-class events, is also getting ready for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Mayor Tom Tate highlighted the importance of this event, stating, “It’s showtime on the Gold Coast,” emphasizing the incredible experience basketball fans can expect.
