The latest Climate Action Scorecards are here, showcasing how well UK councils are tackling climate change. Notably, Greater London, Greater Manchester, Winchester, and Bristol City Council have earned the highest scores.

These results come from Climate Emergency UK. They assess how local councils deal with environmental issues. Sadly, the overall picture isn’t great: the average council score is just 38%, a mere 6 points higher than the previous assessment in 2023. This means many councils are falling short in areas like air quality, biodiversity, and resilience.

Out of 391 local authorities, only 62 managed a score of 50% or more. While this is an improvement—21 more than last time—it still highlights major gaps. Many councils struggle with funding and knowledge, hindering their progress towards net-zero goals.

Isaac Beevor, Partnerships Director at Climate Emergency UK, emphasizes the need for support from the UK Government. He believes making climate action a legal duty for councils could improve their scores significantly. This would provide necessary funding and powers to help tackle the climate crisis.

Interestingly, Greater London has already made climate action a legal responsibility. This proactive approach contrasts sharply with councils in England and Northern Ireland, where scores remain low. Many councils here scored below 20%, with an average of just 23%. In comparison, Welsh councils average 36%, and Scottish councils fare slightly better, averaging 38%.

Beavor points out the importance of a legal duty to act on climate change, similar to what Scotland and Wales have. He believes that empowering councils with legal mandates could protect residents against threats like flooding and air pollution.

Current trends show that public concern about climate change is growing. Social media discussions reflect a strong desire among citizens for more decisive action. Recent surveys reveal that about 80% of Britons support tax increases on the worst corporate polluters, indicating a push for accountability.
