Why San Francisco Was Just Named the Worst-Run Major City in America: A Shocking Report

San Francisco has recently taken a hit in a new report ranking U.S. cities on how well they are managed. According to a study by WalletHub, it landed at the bottom, coming in 148th out of 148 cities.

The report evaluated how city leaders spend public funds and the services residents receive. Adam McCann, a financial writer, explained that effectiveness is measured by comparing service quality to the city’s overall budget. They considered 36 different metrics, covering categories like financial stability, education, health, safety, the economy, and infrastructure.

San Francisco’s poor ranking isn’t surprising. The city has been dealing with major challenges like a housing crisis, dwindling public school enrollment, and a notable population decline. The recent election of a new mayor, Daniel Lurie, marked a shift in voter sentiment. He defeated the incumbent, London Breed, reflecting a desire for new policies, especially regarding crime and homelessness.

Notably, other cities like Detroit, Oakland, New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore also ranked poorly. In contrast, Provo, Utah, was named the best-run city, thanks to its economic growth, low crime rate, and well-maintained infrastructure. Mayor Michelle Kaufusi attributes their success to focusing on education, safety, and responsible spending.

Recent statistics show that Provo has a business growth rate of about 5.2% and a high school graduation rate nearing 91%. Such figures suggest a community that is invested in its future.

As San Francisco grapples with its challenges, residents are hopeful that new leadership will bring about the necessary change. The city’s future will depend on effective management and a renewed focus on core services to enhance the quality of life for its residents.
