A particle detector floating high above Antarctica has picked up some strange radio signals from beneath the ice. The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) is a cool experiment that uses a balloon to search for cosmic neutrinos—tiny particles that come from deep space and only interact through gravity and the weak force.

Stephanie Wissel, an associate professor at Penn State, explained, "We have antennas on a balloon 40 kilometers up in the sky. We aim them down at the ice, looking for neutrinos that create radio signals when they interact with the ice."

Recently, the ANITA team detected two unusual radio pulses that seem to challenge what we know about particle physics. The signals came from below the ice and traveled at steep angles. Wisell noted the puzzling fact that for the radio wave to surface, it had to pass through 6,000 to 7,000 kilometers of rock—far more than was previously considered possible.

Surprisingly, these signals might not even be from neutrinos. While neutrinos create "ice showers"—radio emissions when they strike ice—they also produce tau leptons that decay and generate "air showers." The data from ANITA, however, exhibited a sharper angle than models predict. Other observatories, like IceCube and the Pierre Auger Observatory, haven’t reported similar upward-traveling air showers, raising further questions about the origins of ANITA’s signals.

Wissel mentioned they could be linked to some unique radio effects happening near the ice and the horizon, but no clear explanation has emerged so far. “Right now, this is still a mystery,” she said.
