Princess of Wales Bows Out of Royal Ascot: What It Means for the Event and Fans

The Princess of Wales, Catherine, won’t be attending Royal Ascot this year. She’s focusing on her health as she eases back into public life after her cancer diagnosis last year. Royal insiders say she wants to find the right rhythm for her engagements.

Catherine was looking forward to the event, where she would have joined her husband, the Prince of Wales, along with the King and Queen in the carriage procession. Many racegoers were eager to see her, especially since William would be presenting awards for race winners during the second day of the event.

Kensington Palace confirmed her absence. Fans last saw her smiling and interacting with family during the Order of the Garter service earlier this week. Catherine has been making more public appearances, including at Trooping the Colour and a visit to the V&A East Storehouse.

After her treatment, she shared that she is now in remission. She first announced her diagnosis last March and completed chemotherapy in September. In her own words, she stated, “Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus.”

Catherine skipped Royal Ascot last year as well. At that time, she expressed gratitude for the messages of support she received and noted her progress, although she acknowledged that she still had challenges ahead.

Royal Ascot is one of the highlights of the summer social season and attracts over 250,000 attendees. The event kicked off with a traditional carriage procession, celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. This custom began in 1825 during George IV’s reign, signifying the start of the day’s festivities.

Queen Elizabeth II had a long history with the races, owning and breeding numerous racehorses, winning more than 20 times throughout her 70 years. Today, the King and Queen have inherited her stable and recently celebrated their first Royal Ascot win with their horse, Desert Hero.
