Hyderabad: Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, is in England to seek help for a sports hernia injury affecting his right side. Sources indicate he plans to consult a specialist soon.
Yadav recently had an impressive season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, scoring over 700 runs for the Mumbai Indians. He continued his strong performance in the Mumbai T20 League, adding another 122 runs across five matches, which included one half-century.
India’s cricket team is preparing for a five-match Test series against England starting June 20, along with a T20I against Bangladesh on August 26. Unfortunately, Yadav is expected to be sidelined for about three months.
During the IPL, the 34-year-old displayed phenomenal form, averaging 65.18 with a striking rate of 167.91. He secured five half-centuries and finished as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer, just behind Sai Sudharasan.
As part of the national team, Yadav has played one Test, 37 ODIs, and 83 T20Is, accumulating 8, 773, and 2,598 runs, respectively. His contributions have been vital, making him a key player for India over the years.
Harshit Rana Joins the Squad
In other news, the BCCI has welcomed Harshit Rana as the 19th member of the Indian squad for the series against England. This addition is strategic, as pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah is anticipated to miss a couple of matches due to injury. Rana’s inclusion will provide essential backup in Bumrah’s absence.
As cricket evolves, players like Yadav face new challenges. Injuries like a sports hernia are increasingly common in competitive sports. According to recent data from a sports medicine study, around 20% of athletes develop sports hernias, often due to excessive strain on the abdominal muscles. This highlights the importance of recovery and prevention strategies, especially for top-level competitors.
The commitment of athletes to their sport is commendable, but it sometimes comes at a cost. As fans and followers of the game, we can only hope for a speedy recovery for Yadav, ensuring that he continues to shine in future tournaments.
