Important Safety Alert: Israel Urges Evacuation Near Iran’s Arak Heavy Water Reactor

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Israel’s military issued a warning on Thursday for people near Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor to evacuate. This alert appeared on their social media platform, accompanied by a satellite image highlighting the facility.

This warning follows a week of airstrikes targeting Iranian locations, occurring just after Iran’s supreme leader dismissed U.S. calls for surrender. He warned that any military action by the U.S. could lead to severe consequences for them. Meanwhile, signs in Israel suggest the missile threat from Iran is decreasing as some daily restrictions have been lifted.

On Thursday, Israel continued its airstrikes, focusing on Tehran and other regions in Iran. These operations have already hit key targets, including Iran’s enrichment sites in Natanz and nuclear facilities in Isfahan. They have reportedly resulted in the deaths of several high-profile Iranian military and scientific figures.

A human rights organization based in Washington has reported that at least 639 people have died in Iran, including 263 civilians, with over 1,300 more injured. In response, Iran has launched approximately 400 missiles and waves of drones, resulting in 24 deaths in Israel and extensive property damage, including strikes on residential buildings in central areas.

The Arak heavy water reactor, located about 250 kilometers southwest of Tehran, plays a significant role in Iran’s nuclear program. Heavy water is essential for cooling reactors but can also produce plutonium, which can be used to create nuclear weapons. This presents an alarming alternative to uranium enrichment, should Iran decide to pursue it.

The 2015 nuclear deal aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and as part of this agreement, Iran agreed to redesign its Arak reactor to reduce plutonium output. However, since 2019, Iran has been operating a secondary circuit of this reactor, which aligns with the deal’s conditions but raises concerns about its future capabilities.

After the U.S. withdrew from the agreement in 2018, Britain stepped in to assist with the reactor’s redesign. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which monitors nuclear activities globally, has urged Israel to refrain from attacking Iranian sites. However, due to limitations imposed by Iran, the agency has reported a lack of clarity regarding Iran’s heavy water production and stockpile.

During negotiations for the 2015 deal, Iran committed to selling heavy water to the West, including a notable transaction with the U.S., which purchased 32 tons for over $8 million. Despite this, the deal has faced criticism from various corners, questioning Iran’s adherence to its terms.
