Yankees Make Exciting Move: Jayvien Sandridge Joins the Team!

The Yankees have made a roster change, bringing up left-handed pitcher Jayvien Sandridge after placing right-hander Yerry De los Santos on the 15-day injured list due to elbow discomfort. To make room, infielder/outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera has been moved to the 60-day injured list after suffering a serious ankle injury that required surgery.

De los Santos pitched 20 innings this season, allowing an impressive 1.80 earned runs per nine innings. However, with a high walk rate of 12.9% and a strikeout rate of just 14%, many felt his performance wasn’t sustainable. His success came from an 88.2% strand rate and not giving up any home runs.

This call-up is a big moment for Sandridge. The 26-year-old has previously worked in the minors with the Orioles, Reds, and Padres but has yet to make it to the major leagues. He signed with the Yankees after a short stint in minor league free agency last year.

Sandridge started this season on the injured list but returned in May. Since then, he has pitched 12 innings, giving up four earned runs while racking up 20 strikeouts. His ability to generate strikeouts is promising, even if his walk rate is a bit high.

Historically, control has been an issue for Sandridge. From 2021 to 2024, he had a 3.94 ERA across 173 2/3 innings in the minors. He struggled with an 18.2% walk rate but countered that by striking out 33.7% of batters. Last July, FanGraphs listed him as one of the top 20 prospects in the Padres’ system. They noted that his fastball can reach the upper 90s, but he needs to improve his slider control.

The Yankees now have two lefties in their bullpen, with Tim Hill being the only other southpaw. Sandridge’s presence provides a different pitching style, giving the team more options. He still has several options left and could be with the Yankees for years if he performs well.

As for Cabrera, his switch to the 60-day IL was expected due to his injury. Although he can technically return 60 days from his IL placement, it’s likely he will miss most of the season.
