Mike Lynch’s Stunning Superyacht Bayesian Successfully Recovered from Sicilian Seabed

Mike Lynch’s superyacht, the Bayesian, has resurfaced after sinking during a fierce storm near Sicily last August. The tragic incident claimed the lives of seven people, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Salvage crews raised the 56-meter vessel from about 50 meters below the sea over a few days. This complex operation cost around $30 million and involved detaching the boat’s 72-meter mast for ease of retrieval. Once the Bayesian reaches the port of Termini Imerese, investigators will examine it closely to uncover the cause of the sinking.

On the night of the accident, the yacht was anchored near Porticello when it was struck by dangerous winds just before dawn. Lynch had recently been cleared of fraud charges related to the sale of his tech company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard. He was enjoying a trip with his family to celebrate this turning point in his life.

Along with Lynch and his daughter, several others perished. Fortunately, six guests, including his wife Angela Bacares, and nine crew members survived. The recovery effort faced challenges, including a tragic incident in which a diver lost his life during operations.

Investigation into the sinking has sparked suspicions of manslaughter. The yacht’s captain and two crew members are under scrutiny, though this does not equate to guilt at this stage. A recent report by the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) suggested the yacht may have had vulnerabilities to high winds that were not recognized by the owner or crew. It also mentioned a likely waterspout that could have been the immediate cause of the sinking, which occurred in mere seconds.

The salvage operation is politically sensitive as Italian authorities worry about confidential materials on board that may interest foreign governments. As investigators dig deeper, the hope is to piece together what led to this tragic event.
