Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, son of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is stepping into an exciting new journey. He’s just been accepted to study Astronomy at Wesleyan University in North Carolina, USA. Astronomy focuses on celestial objects and the universe, a fascinating field that’s gaining attention worldwide.

Interestingly, there are no public universities in Ghana offering Astronomy degrees right now. A social media account, “Ashanti Nation,” pointed out that while universities are starting to get involved in space sciences, full degree programs are still missing. Notably, KNUST (Kumasi) recently hosted its first Astronomy & Space Science Conference, which shows a rising interest among students.

When asked about his graduation on June 21, 2025, Oheneba expressed mixed feelings. He felt nervous yet proud with all eyes on him. He shared, “I feel great, but nervous. Everyone is here, and all the cameras are on me.” It’s a moment many can relate to when stepping into the spotlight.

This growing interest in Astronomy isn’t just limited to Ghana. It reflects a global trend. According to a recent survey by the International Astronomical Union, interest in space and astronomy education has surged in the past few years, especially among youth.
