Philips is set to increase prices on its popular Hue smart lighting products starting July 1. The company cites tariffs as the main reason for this change and hints that prices could rise even more in the future.
Recently, Philips reached out to customers through an email, encouraging them to buy Hue products before the price hikes kick in.
According to a statement from Signify, Philips’ parent company, the price rise is due to “tariffs affecting our Philips Hue portfolio in the US.” They assure customers that they remain committed to high-quality smart lighting options.
“We will adjust prices based on any new or additional tariffs in the future,” they added.
Interestingly, some Hue products are already pricier in the US than in Europe. For instance, the new Hue Smart Button is priced at $33 in the US, while it’s €22 in Europe. Similarly, the Hue Play wall washer costs $220 here, compared to €200 across the Atlantic. This trend of nearly 1-to-1 euro-to-dollar conversions has been noted historically.
Consumer reactions are mixed, with some expressing frustration at the rising costs on social media, particularly in light of their already hefty price tags. This shift may push some customers to explore alternative smart lighting options, which are becoming increasingly popular. For example, recent surveys show a growing interest in budget-friendly smart home products among consumers.
In the tech industry, experts are closely watching this move. Some believe that rising costs could drive innovation, with manufacturers looking to create competitive products at lower price points. As this situation unfolds, it may shape the future of smart lighting in ways we haven’t yet seen.
