Upon the recommendation of President Jay Morgan, the Morehead State University Board of Regents proudly announces Wayne Martin (Class of 1968, 1972) as the 2025 recipient of the Founders Award for University Service. This award, established in 1978, honors individuals who have significantly contributed to MSU as employees or volunteers.
President Jay Morgan emphasized, "The Founders Award for University Service embodies the spirit of Morehead State. Regent Martin’s dedication has truly enhanced our university, and we are delighted to recognize him."
Wayne Martin served as the head basketball coach at MSU from 1978 to 1987. Under his leadership, the Eagles reached the NCAA tournaments twice. In 1982, he was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year and was inducted into the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. He also coached three NBA draft picks, including Hall of Famer Bob McCann.
Beyond coaching, Martin has held significant roles in media. He was regional vice president for Gray Television Inc. and president of Gray Kentucky Television Inc., overseeing stations in Lexington, Hazard, and Bowling Green. Martin’s impact goes beyond athletics. He served multiple terms on the MSU Board of Regents, offering steady leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring the university focused on the needs of students and staff. He was vice chair from 2016 to 2020, guiding the university through critical initiatives. His current term extends to 2027, having been reappointed in 2021.
“Coach Wayne Martin exemplifies our motto, ‘Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle,’” said Dr. Sanford Holbrook (Class of 1997, 2024), chair of the Board of Regents. “His commitment to Morehead State University is respected nationwide.”
