Bangladesh is truly feeling the effects of climate change. Natural disasters like cyclones, floods, and heatwaves have become more common. In this tough situation, tree plantation programs are vital for protecting our environment and lessening climate change’s harsh impacts.
One key player in this effort is Bonayan, one of the largest private afforestation initiatives in Bangladesh. For 45 years, Bonayan has worked hard to improve the environment. On World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, Bonayan plans to distribute hundreds of thousands of saplings across the country. This event, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to encourage everyone to take climate action seriously.
Since its start in 1980, Bonayan has had a significant impact on preserving nature and biodiversity. To date, it has given away over 130 million saplings, including fruit-bearing, forest, and medicinal plants—all for free. The program has also established 119 gardens focused on medicinal plants.
Bonayan’s work extends to the Rohingya refugee camps, where around 1.1 million displaced individuals reside. In areas like Teknaf and Ukhiya, about 1,500 hectares of forest were cut down to accommodate these refugees. In response, Bonayan, along with the government and several organizations, has been replanting trees. Since 2018, they’ve planted over 300,000 saplings in the Kutupalong camp and along nearby roads.
Bonayan has received several awards for its ongoing commitment to tackling climate issues. These accolades include five Prime Minister’s National Awards, the Chief Advisor’s National Award, and the SDG Brand Championship Award 2023.
Looking ahead, Bonayan plans to distribute over 3 million saplings this year. Operating in 24 districts, including Dhaka, Chattogram, and Rangamati, Bonayan serves more than 25,000 beneficiaries annually. Its collaboration with both public and private sectors continues to drive efforts toward a greener Bangladesh.
Interestingly, as climate change awareness grows globally, similar tree-planting initiatives are gaining popularity. In 2021, a survey found that many people, especially in urban areas, want to participate in tree-planting activities. This trend demonstrates a rising commitment to environmental issues among everyday citizens. Together, these efforts offer hope for a more sustainable future.
