Transforming Futures: Concordia University Texas Elevates Computer Science Program to Thrive in Austin’s Tech Boom

Concordia University Texas is enhancing its computer science program to help students thrive in the tech world. This program combines theory with practical skills, offering focuses in areas like cybersecurity, data security, and software engineering.

Dr. Bindu George, the Program Chair, emphasizes the program’s relevance. "We provide courses that matter in today’s job market," she says. Smaller class sizes allow for more interaction between students and professors, which helps develop crucial skills.

Being located in Austin, a booming tech hub, gives students unique advantages. They have access to guest lectures from major companies like Amazon and valuable mentorships. "We seek collaborative projects to enhance learning," Dr. George noted.

The program boasts success stories such as De’Juan Leffell, a first-generation college graduate who found employment after his Capstone project. Partnerships with local businesses lead to internships and part-time jobs for students, furthering their real-world experience.

Looking ahead, Concordia Texas plans to launch a Master of Science in Computer Science in spring 2026. They will also introduce a $10,000 Computer Science Excellence Scholarship this fall, aimed at making higher education more affordable.

Recent statistics highlight an increasing demand for tech workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in computer and information technology are projected to grow by 13% from 2020 to 2030. This growth further emphasizes the importance of programs like Concordia’s, paving the way for students to enter a thriving job market.

Dr. George describes the future of the program as "dynamic and forward-looking," reflecting the ever-changing landscape of technology.
