Discover UC Davis Health’s Exciting New 48X Complex: Highlights from the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony!

On June 25, UC Davis Health celebrated the opening of its new 48X Complex, a cutting-edge outpatient surgery center in Sacramento. The facility, which spans 268,000 square feet, aims to meet the increasing demand for same-day and overnight surgical services. This $589 million project is set to transform patient care and enhance the health system’s capabilities.

Michael Condrin, interim CEO of UC Davis Health, expressed excitement about the center, highlighting its commitment to more convenient and personalized care. The center is expected to create over 550 jobs, contributing significantly to the local economy.

The 48X Complex will expand surgical capacity for outpatient procedures. It features:

  • 14 operating rooms
  • 59 recovery bays
  • 14 private recovery rooms
  • 96 exam rooms
  • 19 treatment rooms

Diana L. Farmer, chair of the Department of Surgery, emphasized the efficiency of outpatient surgery, enabling patients to return to their normal activities quickly without a lengthy hospital stay. This approach aligns with current trends, as outpatient surgeries have surged. According to a recent study by the American College of Surgeons, outpatient surgeries have increased 27% in the past decade, highlighting the shift toward more accessible care options.

The first phase of the facility will welcome patients starting July 1. This includes an extended recovery unit and several operating rooms aimed at reducing wait times for elective procedures. Future clinics for orthopaedics, urology, and neurosurgery are set to open by January 2026, ensuring coordinated care under one roof.

Looking to the future, UC Davis Health plans to add over 3.5 million square feet of new facilities by 2030. This initiative includes expanding locations in Elk Grove, Rocklin, and Folsom, marking it as one of the largest health system expansions in the United States.

Furthermore, the 48X Complex emphasizes sustainability. It aims for LEED certification, reflecting UC Davis Health’s commitment to energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. As more patients prioritize healthcare facilities that consider eco-friendliness, this focus positions UC Davis Health as a leader in both innovation and responsibility.

As health care continues to evolve, the 48X Complex represents a significant milestone, merging advanced technology with patient-centered care, and setting new standards for outpatient services.
