Southeastern Housing Foundation Contributes ,000+ to Wilmington Food Bank: A Generous Boost for Local Families

Wilmington, N.C. — Helping Families in Need

The Southeastern Housing Foundation recently gave over $8,000 to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard to help fight food insecurity. This donation comes at a crucial time when many families are struggling to afford groceries.

Roxann Lansdowne, the executive director of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, explained that they operate in a food desert. This means many residents lack access to affordable food options. "Most of our clients can’t provide enough food for their families each month," she said.

With grocery prices soaring, this funding will make a significant difference. Lansdowne pointed out that the center serves about 450 families weekly. Given the current cost of groceries, this support ensures they can meet the demand for food assistance.

The funds will not only help buy food from local stores but will also assist with rent for the center. Jody Waino, president of the Housing Foundation of Southeastern North Carolina, noted that the timing of this donation is especially important, especially after the county cut certain funds.

Lansdowne assured the community that Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard will continue to serve those in need, saying, “We have amazing volunteers and strong community support. We aren’t going anywhere.”

The Bigger Picture

Food insecurity is a pressing issue across the U.S. According to a recent report from Feeding America, 35 million people in the country faced hunger in 2021. The pandemic exacerbated the problem, revealing how vital local food banks are. Community efforts like those from the Southeastern Housing Foundation can make a real impact.

Local organizations have increasingly turned to social media to raise awareness and mobilize volunteers. Hashtags like #FoodForAll are helping to connect people who want to make a difference.

In summary, the generous donation from the Southeastern Housing Foundation will help ensure that families facing food scarcity receive the support they need. As community efforts grow, the hope is that fewer families will have to worry about where their next meal will come from.
