Join the Movement: How Communicators Can Lead the Charge in Climate Action

A recent seminar at St Francis College for Women brought attention to the crucial role of communication in addressing environmental challenges. Titled “Framing the Future: Environment, Climate Change & Communication,” the event gathered students and experts to discuss pressing ecological issues.

Professor T Uma Joseph, the college Principal, highlighted the importance of informed discussions. She referenced Pope Leo’s Green Vatican Initiative as a notable example of advocacy in tackling environmental concerns. K Ravi Kumar, the head of the department, urged students to become impactful storytellers. He pointed to global agreements like the Paris Agreement, which aim to combat climate change through cooperative efforts.

Dr. Shailendra Boora, an environmental communication expert, captivated the audience with his insights. He linked rising cancer rates to environmental pollution and criticized the flawed “Infinite Growth Model,” suggesting it exacerbates ecological damage. Dr. Boora emphasized a need for a “content revolution” in communication—one rooted in honesty and a dedication to sustainable practices.

Statistics support the urgency of these discussions. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution alone is responsible for 7 million deaths each year, underscoring the dire connections between environment and health. Furthermore, a recent survey indicated that 76% of young people feel anxious about climate change, reinforcing the need for effective communication strategies.

The seminar ultimately called on future communicators to become champions for a sustainable future, highlighting the impact their voices can have in shaping public discourse around these critical issues.
