Galway Welcomes the Exciting Launch of the Green Clubs Programme!

Clubs from all over County Galway recently came together for the first Green Clubs event at Ballinderreen GAA Club. This gathering, organized by Galway County Council and the GAA Green Clubs Programme, focused on how sports organizations can take action against climate change.

The GAA Green Clubs Programme kicked off in 2020 with support from the Department of the Environment. It aims to help clubs lessen their impact on the environment while promoting sustainability in their communities.

Denise Feeney, the Community Climate Action Officer, emphasized that the program allows clubs to lead the way both on and off the field. “By adopting eco-friendly practices, clubs can save money, enhance their facilities, and strengthen their ties with the local community,” she said.

The event included expert speakers who shared valuable insights on various topics like energy efficiency, reducing waste, and funding opportunities. Notable speakers included Orla Nic Suibhne from SEAI, Sinéad Ní Mhainnin from MyWaste.ie, and ecologists Malena Thren and Caití Farren. They highlighted how sports can inspire greater climate action, and club representatives shared their own green initiatives.

Pól Beilliú, Chairperson of Galway GAA, was encouraged by the commitment shown by local clubs. “I hope these examples motivate others to start their own projects. With the next round of the Community Climate Action Fund coming soon, I look forward to seeing innovative ideas from our community,” he said.

Research by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows that engaging local communities in sustainability practices can lead to lasting change. This approach helps not only the environment but builds stronger community ties as well.

Ultimately, as more clubs join initiatives like the GAA Green Clubs Programme, the positive impact grows. Clubs interested in learning more can reach out to Galway County Council’s climate action team for support.
