Unlocking Opportunities: Indiana Sports Corp Joins Forces with Butler University to Launch the Institute for Sports & Entertainment

Butler University is rolling out an exciting new initiative: the Institute for Sports and Entertainment (BISE). This program aims to boost the region’s role in sports and entertainment, aligning with the Indiana Sports Corp’s goal to make Indianapolis a global hub in these fields by 2050.

BISE will focus on training talent, conducting research, and forming valuable partnerships. It taps into the “Sports Academia” theme of the Indiana Sports Corp’s 2050 Vision, making it a perfect fit for their plans.

The Hamilton County Sports Authority is teaming up with BISE as the first partner. Butler students and faculty will work on the communication and marketing efforts for the upcoming LIV Golf tournament, set for August 15–17 at The Club at Chatham Hills.

Sarah Myer, chief of staff and strategy at Indiana Sports Corp, emphasized the importance of investing in talent. She stated, “By blending top-notch education with hands-on experience, Butler is paving the way for future leaders in our industry. We’re thrilled to work with BISE to spur innovation and reinforce Indianapolis as a premier destination for sports and entertainment.”

Professor Bob Schultz will spearhead BISE. His extensive experience includes roles with Downtown Indy, Inc. and Visit Indy, and he has been involved in major events like the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Fours. This wealth of knowledge positions him well to lead the initiative.

Joseph Valenzano, dean of Butler’s College of Communication, highlighted the university’s strengths in athletics and the arts. He said, “We have fantastic venues like Hinkle Fieldhouse and strong programs in Sports Media and Management. Butler is the ideal partner for the Indiana Sports Corp."

Butler students have already gained experience through programs like Street Teams, welcoming attendees to events such as the NBA All-Star Game. Now, BISE will involve faculty and students from multiple colleges, including Communication and Education.

Craig Caldwell, dean of Butler’s Lacy School of Business, noted the practical experience students will gain. “Our partnerships will strengthen local sports and entertainment organizations that often lack enough personnel. This is truly a win-win.”

In an age where practical experience is vital for careers, this initiative aligns perfectly with what today’s students need. According to recent studies, hands-on internships significantly improve job prospects post-graduation. Programs like BISE not only benefit students but also help local industries thrive.
