How Indian Railways is Boosting Monsoon Readiness with Emergency Wagons, Patrolling, and Water Level Monitoring

With the arrival of the rainy season, Indian Railways is stepping up its efforts to ensure safe train operations. The focus is on keeping emergency supplies close to areas that might be vulnerable during heavy rainfall.

Pankaj Kumar Singh, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Eastern Railway, shared some details about their preparations. They have learned from past monsoon experiences and are ready with boulders and quarry dust stored at various stations. For example, there are four wagons of boulders at Kasganj Station, ten at Gularbhoj, and even more at other key locations. These materials can be quickly deployed in emergencies.

To enhance safety, patrolling has increased around sensitive tracks and bridges. This includes both stationary and mobile patrols to keep an eye on areas that have faced erosion in previous years. The water levels of rivers are closely monitored using automatic devices installed on bridges.

The railways have gathered essential emergency supplies, including boulders, sand, cement bags, service girders, and tents. Shashi Kiran, a rail official from North Western Railways, emphasized efforts to prevent waterlogging in underpasses. They’ve identified problem areas and installed pumps at 167 railway underpasses to drain excess water.

In case of severe weather, 328 permanent watchmen are stationed at rail under-bridges to manage traffic and prevent accidents. Collaboration with local authorities is also being established to manage water flow from elevated areas into underpasses.

Recently, after a landslide in the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, rail officials held an emergency meeting with representatives from the state government and other agencies. A landslide affected about 100 meters of track due to slope failure near a nearby road.

As railways enhance their safety measures, the trends in travel show that many passengers are shifting from air travel to trains, especially following high-profile incidents like the Air India plane crash. This shift could reshape travel dynamics in the country.
