PUEBLO, Colo. – The local health department is sounding the alarm about West Nile Virus as some mosquitoes in Larimer County have tested positive for it. This is the first occurrence of the virus in 2025 for Colorado.
West Nile Virus can affect anyone. Once a person is bitten by an infected mosquito, symptoms may appear between two to fourteen days later. Common symptoms include fever, headaches, and body aches. In severe cases, it can lead to neurological issues.
In Pueblo County, West Nile Virus is a yearly concern. The health department is urging residents to take precautions to keep themselves and their families safe. Here are four simple steps to follow:

Drain: Remove any standing water around your home. Mosquitoes breed in water, so check things like birdbaths and pet dishes weekly.

Dusk and Dawn: Try to stay indoors during these times. Mosquitoes are most active during early morning and evening.

DEET: Use insect repellent that contains DEET when venturing outside.
- Dress: Wear long sleeves and pants if you’re outside when mosquitoes are around.
According to the CDC, West Nile Virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States. Protecting yourself now can help reduce the risk as summer approaches.
