Xiaomi has just launched its latest electric vehicle, the YU7, and the response has been incredible. Within just three minutes, they received over 200,000 real orders. That’s not just hype; customers had to pay a non-refundable deposit of 5,000 RMB (about $700) to secure their orders.

This marks a big step for Xiaomi, which only started its electric vehicle division four years ago and released its first car, the SU7, last year. With the YU7, CEO Lei Jun is positioning the vehicle as a serious competitor to Tesla’s Model Y.

During the launch, Lei Jun confidently showcased differences between the two cars. He highlighted how the YU7 is quieter than the Model Y, thanks in part to double-paned acoustic glass and optimized suspension. Notably, the YU7’s electro-shading sunroof keeps the cabin cooler than Tesla’s offering, perfect for those hot summer days.

Pricing also plays a huge role in the YU7’s appeal. The base model starts at 253,500 RMB (around $35,300), which is 10,000 RMB less than the Model Y, and it offers more range—over 200 extra kilometers. The YU7 Pro starts at 279,900 RMB, significantly cheaper than Model Y’s Long Range version. The top model, YU7 Max, is also offered at 329,900 RMB, undercutting Tesla’s Performance model by 25,000 RMB.

This strong pricing strategy, combined with favorable comparisons to Tesla, is likely why Xiaomi is facing such high demand. A recent survey showed that price is a major factor for EV buyers, with 62% of potential customers naming it as their top consideration. In a market where competition is fierce, Xiaomi seems poised to capture a significant share.

Social media buzz is growing, with users discussing their excitement over the YU7’s features and pricing. Many see it as a "Tesla killer," a title that’s often thrown around but now carries more weight. This could signal a shift in the EV landscape, putting more pressure on Tesla, especially given its recent struggles in China.
