Johni Broome always dreamt of making it to the NBA. His hard work paid off when he was picked by the Philadelphia 76ers as the No. 35 choice in the second round of the 2025 NBA draft. “This is probably the most exciting moment of my life,” Broome shared. Hearing his name called felt surreal for him.
The NBA draft recently took place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. This year’s format had teams making selections over two nights, a change made to keep the event manageable and allow teams to regroup after the first round.
The second round kicked off with a trade. The Phoenix Suns took Rasheer Fleming at No. 32 after acquiring that pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves. “It’s a crazy feeling,” Fleming said, reflecting on his journey through the draft process.
Fleming had a solid college career, averaging 14.7 points and 8.5 rebounds. Other notable picks included Ryan Kalkbrenner and Kam Jones, both well-known in the college circuit, who were also selected early in the second round.
The draft saw teams like the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers actively trading to secure promising players. Orlando traded up for Noah Penda, a French forward, while the Lakers acquired Adou Thiero from Arkansas.
Statistics reveal that 33% of NBA All-Stars have come from the second round, highlighting the potential hidden in these later picks. Players like Jalen Brunson and Nikola Jokic remind us that the second round can yield star talent.
Broome, who faced setbacks late in his college season, remains optimistic. He believes his experience against top teams, like Kentucky, has prepared him for the NBA. “I’m ready to show what I can do with the 76ers,” he said eagerly.
