Air India Crash Update: Key Data from Dreamliner Black Boxes Now Being Analyzed

Investigators have made some progress in the investigation of the recent Air India crash. They’ve recovered the flight recorders, also known as black boxes, from the wreckage. This event is crucial for understanding what happened during the flight.

On June 12, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was headed to London, tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. The crash resulted in the loss of 270 lives, with only one survivor among the 242 passengers.

Both Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorders (EAFRs) were retrieved a few days after the incident—one was found on a rooftop, and the other in the debris. It may take weeks for the government to analyze and share the information from these recorders.

The flight recorders collect vital data. They track important details like gear positions, flap settings, engine performance, and even the sounds and communications in the cockpit. This data helps recreate the flight’s final moments, which is essential for determining what led to the crash.

The investigation team, comprising officials from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), accessed the data recently. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy stressed the importance of making the findings public quickly for aviation safety and awareness.

Interestingly, the timeline for analyzing the recorders has raised questions among experts. Some have noted that delays in data retrieval are atypical for such investigations.

The crash itself remains a mystery. Air India Flight 171 was airborne for less than a minute before it went down, crashing into a populated area. Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and co-pilot Clive Kundar issued a mayday call—this was the last communication before the tragedy unfolded.

As we await more details from the ongoing investigation, the event serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges of air travel safety. With ongoing improvements in technology and international cooperation in investigations, hopes are high that these findings will prevent similar tragedies in the future.
