Heartfelt Farewell: Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman, Her Husband, and Beloved Dog Lie in State as Suspected Killer Faces Justice in Court

Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman made history as the first woman to lie in state at the Minnesota Capitol. This poignant moment occurred shortly after her suspected murderer appeared in court.

Boelter has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including second-degree murder. In addition to the Hortmans, he’s also charged with injuring state Senator John Hoffman and his wife during the same violent spree. Authorities reported that Boelter pretended to be a law enforcement officer to enter the homes of the lawmakers.

After a massive manhunt, which involved nearly 200 officers, Boelter was found two days later armed in a nearby field. Investigators later discovered a notebook that revealed a “hit list” of other politicians who had supported abortion rights, indicating a disturbing motive behind his actions.

In a statement, Boelter’s wife expressed her shock and sorrow, calling the violence a betrayal of their family values. The Hortman children shared their devastation, remembering their parents as the guiding lights of their lives.
