COLUMBIA — Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services is launching focus groups to dive deeper into Boone County’s food system.
Teaming up with the University of Missouri Extension, they’re inviting local residents to share their thoughts and experiences about food access within the community. Participants can discuss everything from how they shop for food to the resources available for obtaining it.
Austin Krohn, a spokesperson for the Health Department, shared, “These focus groups could really help improve food access for everyone in Boone County, regardless of their situation.” The goal is to understand how people receive assistance, whether through programs like WIC or state resources, and to find ways to provide more nutritious food options.
The focus groups aim to clarify if the food system is equitable and resilient, particularly during challenging times. Katie Adkins, from The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, emphasized the importance of these discussions about food insecurity. “When we talk about food insecurity, many feel they are alone in their struggles,” she said. Adkins noted that 1 in 7 people in Boone County face food insecurity, highlighting a significant community challenge.
Understanding the food system’s resiliency can inform local strategies for improving access. Recent surveys show that during economic downturns, many communities see a spike in food assistance needs. For example, a national study indicated that food insecurity increased by 30% during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, making these conversations even more critical today.
The first focus group session is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on July 8 at the Sanford-Kimpton Building, 1005 W. Worley St., and will continue throughout July. Participants who join will receive a complimentary meal and a $20 gift card as a thank-you for their input.
