“It’s really important to listen to your body,” Dr. Husan says. He emphasizes that acclimating to the heat is key. Heat cramps might seem mild, but they can be the first step toward serious conditions like heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In fact, up to 70% of people who experience heat stroke face life-threatening risks.

Each year, around 12,000 deaths in the U.S. are linked to heat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These statistics highlight how crucial it is to stay hydrated and take breaks in cool places.

To beat the heat, Dr. Husan suggests wearing loose, light-colored clothing and avoiding caffeinated drinks, which can dehydrate you. He also advises taking breaks and checking in with others, especially those who might be more vulnerable to heat.
