Honoring a Minnesota Lawmaker: Gilbert, Her Cherished Dog, Stays by Her Side as She Lies in State

ST. PAUL, Minn. — In a heartbreaking event, Democratic leader and Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, lost their lives when a gunman opened fire early on June 14. Their beloved golden retriever, Gilbert, was also injured in the attack but received a special honor after passing away due to his wounds.

Gilbert became the first dog ever to lie in state at the Capitol. Alongside the Hortmans’ caskets, a gold urn holding his ashes sat on display. Traditionally, this honor has only been given to prominent figures, with 19 prior recipients, all of whom were men. Melissa is notable for being the first woman to receive this recognition.

Hundreds gathered to pay their respects. Friends and community members reflected on the tragedy. “We’ve all had family, pets, and it’s tragic to have the whole family lost in a moment like that,” Kacy Deschene shared, capturing the collective grief felt by many.

Gilbert’s story spread quickly on social media. Tributes poured in as news about the family’s loss circulated. The alleged shooter, Vance Boelter, had previously targeted other Democratic officials but was apprehended shortly after the incident.

The veterinary clinic that cared for Gilbert described him as “sweet and gentle.” Many mourners have since honored him, including leaving Milk-Bone dog treats at a memorial outside the House chamber.

In light of the attack, local nonprofits, like Helping Paws Inc., offered canine therapy to those mourning at the Capitol. Volunteers brought cheerful golden retrievers to comfort visitors. Those close to the Hortmans noted that they had fostered service dogs as part of their community involvement.

Interestingly, Gilbert was deemed “too friendly” to be a service dog. Rep. Erin Koegel humorously remarked that Melissa wanted him to fail so she could keep him. This playful bond between Gilbert and the Hortmans demonstrated just how much they cherished their furry friend.
