Record-Breaking 46°C Heat Hits Spain Amid Ongoing European Heatwave: What You Need to Know

A heatwave is sweeping across Europe, bringing dangerously high temperatures. Countries are responding with health warnings as the heat shows no signs of relenting.

Southern Spain is feeling the heat the most, with Seville recording temperatures over 40°C. A recent peak at 46°C in El Granado has set a new June record. This month is poised to be the hottest June ever, according to Spain’s national weather service.

Other countries are also feeling the impact. Red heat alerts are in place for parts of Portugal, Italy, and Croatia. Numerous amber warnings stretch across Spain, France, Austria, Belgium, and several others.

Tragically, the heatwave has led to severe consequences. In Barcelona, a woman died after her shift as a road sweeper during this extreme heat. Investigations are underway. Similarly, hospitals in Italy report a surge in heatstroke cases, especially among vulnerable groups—like the elderly and cancer patients. According to Mario Guarino, vice president of the Italian Society of Emergency Medicine, facilities are creating special pathways to treat heatstroke victims swiftly.

In response, cities like Bologna are opening climate shelters equipped with air conditioning and fresh water. Rome has made city swimming pools free for seniors over 70.

The intense heat affects the Balkans, too. Serbia recorded its highest-ever temperature, and Slovenia also saw record highs for June. North Macedonia is grappling with sweltering temperatures of 42°C.

As the week progresses, the heat is expected to intensify in France, Germany, and the UK. Alerts are active in parts of England, with London temperatures possibly hitting 35°C.

Experts warn that these extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Research by World Weather Attribution indicates that heatwaves like this one are now about ten times more likely than before the industrial era.

Climate experts emphasize the link between our changing climate and the rising intensity of heatwaves. While we can’t pinpoint a single event as a product of climate change, the trend is clear.
