Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently shared new insights about Apple’s upcoming headset and smart glasses. He predicts that Apple is developing at least seven devices across two product lines, with a release expected by 2025.
Kuo believes that head-mounted devices will shape the future of electronics. His report points to three products in the Vision series and four versions of smart glasses. Five of these are on a confirmed timeline, while the other two are still being planned.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what Kuo expects:
- M5 Vision Pro: Scheduled for mass production in Q3 2025, this updated version will likely ship around 150,000 to 200,000 units by the end of that year.
- Apple Vision Air: This lighter, more affordable version is targeted for mass production in Q3 2027. Kuo anticipates it will weigh 40% less and feature a powerful iPhone processor.
- Second-Generation Vision Pro: Expected to launch in late 2028, this model will introduce a new design and a faster processor, and it will be more affordable than the original.
As for the Apple Glasses, Kuo revised their release date. They are now expected to enter production in Q2 2027. This version will boast features like voice control and AI-driven environmental sensing. Apple plans to offer various frame options, possibly creating a strong competitor to existing smart glasses like Meta’s Ray-Ban Stories.
- First-Gen Apple Glasses: Production is aimed for mid-2027, with an anticipated shipment of 3-5 million units.
- Two XR Smart Glasses: Scheduled for production in 2028, these glasses promise advanced display technology and improved interaction through gesture and voice controls.
- Display Accessory: An accessory planned for Mac and iPhone is currently on hold due to weight issues.
Apple’s approach seems strategic. By entering the market later, they might refine their technology and outperform competitors. Kuo estimates that Apple’s entry could surge total market shipments for smart glasses beyond 10 million units by 2027.
Recent data from market research suggests that smart glasses could be a game changer. In 2023 alone, sales in this sector reached an estimated $3.3 billion, highlighting ongoing consumer interest. However, early entrants face challenges as they struggle to establish themselves amidst evolving technology. Kuo anticipates that while other brands may launch products soon, they could remain niche until the technology matures.
