EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Filipino Street Food Fest brought the vibrant flavors of the Philippines right to Chattanooga. More than just a food event, it celebrated culture and community.
Organized by the Filipino-American Association of Greater Chattanooga, the fest invited everyone to taste traditional Filipino street foods and enjoy live performances. “This is all about recreating the street food experience from the Philippines,” said organizer Charity Daan.
Colorful booths showcased classic dishes, with delightful aromas filling the air. Ethan Smith, an attendee, shared, “This is about representing our heritage. Food brings us together, and we love sharing that with everyone.” For many, it was a chance to connect with their roots.
Daan also highlighted ongoing community efforts. “We host cultural events throughout the year, like a summer picnic and a Christmas party. Our culture camp teaches kids about Filipino traditions, which is important since many of them were born here.”
Elvie Smith, another organizer, noted the association’s history. “We’ve been around for a while, officially becoming a nonprofit in 2011. Our mission is to keep our culture alive for future generations.” Ethan added, “We want to continue what our parents and grandparents started—keeping our traditions strong.”
Jules Gonzales echoed this sentiment. “We hope to grow, maybe even have a bigger venue for the food fest next time. It’s all about community and sharing our love through food.”
Faith and connection were also pivotal themes. “We’re grounded in our faith,” Ethan explained. “We want everyone to feel welcome and supported here.”
With humor, Jules added, “Filipinos are the best. Just saying!” Ethan grinned, pointing to his shirt, “I’m here to represent!”
Looking ahead, the organizers are excited about next year’s festival. They want to make it even more vibrant and flavorful, inviting everyone to join in the celebration of community and culture.
Interestingly, events like this have grown nationally; a survey by the National Restaurant Association found ethnic cuisine is increasingly popular, with many Americans eager to explore diverse flavors. This trend shows the power of food in bridging cultural gaps and fostering understanding.
