The U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York has launched a federal investigation involving free-agent guard Malik Beasley. His lawyer, Steve Haney, confirmed this, stating Beasley is a person of interest but has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
“This is just an investigation,” Haney emphasized. “Malik hasn’t been accused or charged with any crime. We hope everyone respects his presumption of innocence.”
The Eastern District declined to comment further, as did Beasley’s agent. However, a spokesperson for the Detroit Pistons acknowledged the investigation’s existence and directed all additional inquiries to the NBA. NBA spokesman Mike Bass mentioned they are cooperating with the federal investigation.
The probe follows a previous case where six individuals were charged with conspiring to defraud a sports betting company. Among them was Toronto Raptors guard Jontay Porter, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy. He was banned from the NBA last April for betting on games and sharing insider information.
Haney stated it’s unclear if Beasley’s situation ties into the Porter case.
Beasley, who signed with the Pistons for one year at $6 million, is set to enter unrestricted free agency. There are reports that he and the Pistons have begun discussions about a potential return.
Last season, Beasley emerged as Detroit’s top three-point shooter, making 319 shots from beyond the arc at an impressive 41.6% rate. This skill helped open up space for teammate Cade Cunningham to operate more effectively. Throughout his time with the Pistons, he averaged 16.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Notably, only NBA All-Star Anthony Edwards made more three-pointers than Beasley during the 2024-25 season.
This season will be crucial for Beasley. With the NBA’s free agency period approaching, player negotiations will ramp up. Teams will be eager to evaluate how such investigations can affect potential acquisitions and contracts. For fans and analysts alike, following Beasley’s next steps will provide insight into how performance on the court can intertwine with off-court issues.
As the world of sports betting faces increased scrutiny, investigations like this highlight the challenges players face in maintaining their careers and reputations. Such developments can shift the landscape of the NBA, impacting not just individuals but teams and how they strategize for future seasons.
