During a game in Charlotte, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca expressed his frustration. After a lengthy 113-minute weather delay, he stated, “For me personally, it’s not football.” He highlighted that multiple games have been paused due to the weather. Maresca feels that suspending matches alters the game significantly, which usually flows continuously for two 45-minute halves.

“When the game is suspended, it’s not football anymore,” he remarked. He emphasized that the frequent interruptions change the players’ mental focus and the overall dynamic of the game. “It’s difficult to go back into the game after that,” he said.

While Maresca appreciates the competition itself, he believes the delays detract from the experience. “In a World Cup or European matches, how many games are suspended? Zero, probably,” he noted.

Looking towards next summer, the World Cup will occur from June 11 to July 19, with several American cities prone to thunderstorms as hosts, including Kansas City, Boston, Philadelphia, and Miami. Having already seen several game interruptions, the risk remains high for delays in key matches.
