Bhupender Yadav Speaks at Times Network’s 2nd Edition of India Climate Summit: Key Insights for a Sustainable Future

In New Delhi, the second edition of the Adani presents Times Network India Climate Summit took place, gathering policymakers, scientists, and climate advocates to discuss India’s journey toward sustainability.

Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, emphasized the importance of addressing climate change. He noted, “Climate change defines our era, and India is taking action.” He highlighted that India achieved its Paris Agreement goals on emissions and renewable energy before the 2030 deadline and is making strides in expanding green cover. Initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, now with 137 member countries, showcase India’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Yadav also introduced The National Cooling Action Plan, aimed at promoting energy efficiency. He stated, “Despite limited international climate finance, we focus on balancing ecology and economy. Citizen-led efforts like Mission LiFE are vital.”

Lokesh Chandra, Managing Director of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company, discussed the state’s shift to solar energy for agriculture. He said, “As Maharashtra aims for a trillion-dollar economy, our energy demand will surpass that of several developed nations, with agriculture consuming about 30%.” The state’s goal includes 16,000 MW of solar power by 2026, which will help transform rural areas and enhance farm productivity.

Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra from the India Meteorological Department discussed climate change impacts on heatwave patterns. He explained, “We see a clear change in heatwave intensity and duration due to greenhouse emissions and urbanization.” This shows a pressing need for climate action.

Fashion and sustainability also took center stage. Bhumi Pednekar, an actor and UNDP Advocate, highlighted how the fashion industry can drive change. She said, “Fashion can be sustainable. It’s about being mindful while consuming. Supporting designers who prioritize conscious practices can lead us to a better future.”

The summit concluded with discussions across various sectors, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts to support India’s climate goals. Recent surveys indicate that nearly 72% of urban Indians are now more aware of climate issues than they were five years ago, reflecting a growing public commitment to sustainability.
