Strengthening Ties: UAE Envoy Alshaali Discusses the Impact of Visa Programme Expansion on Partnership

New Delhi: The recent expansion of the UAE’s visa-on-arrival program for Indian nationals highlights the strong ties between the two countries. Abdulnasser Alshaali, the UAE envoy, emphasized that this new policy is a pivotal moment for enhancing connections and fostering engagement.

In 2023, India played a key role in the UAE’s tourism scene, with around 4.5 million Indians visiting. Now, Indian passport holders with valid residence permits from places like Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore can obtain a visa upon arrival at any UAE entry point.

Implemented since February 13, this change simplifies travel for Indian nationals. It builds on previous eligibility criteria, allowing those with visas or Green Cards from the U.S., U.K., or EU to enjoy the same benefits.

Ambassador Alshaali noted that deeper connections between people are essential. He mentioned that the visa-on-arrival program makes it easier for families to reunite, professionals to work together, and businesses to expand internationally.

Both nations are committed to strengthening their relationship. A recent report from the India-UAE CEPA Council highlighted the importance of enhancing connectivity and easing visa processes to promote tourism and economic growth.

Historically, India and the UAE’s relationship has been on the rise, especially since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in August 2015, which elevated their partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The comprehensive economic partnership agreement signed in 2022 further boosted trade and investment.

A recent survey by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs indicates that seamless travel contributes to economic prosperity and cultural exchange. By reducing entry barriers, initiatives like the visa-on-arrival program help build trust and create vibrant connections among citizens, students, and professionals, reinforcing the partnership at every level.
