A Missouri Senate Committee will hold a hearing on Monday regarding the stalled negotiations between MU Health Care and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. These negotiations have failed to provide an agreement after months of discussions, leaving about 90,000 patients out of network at MU Health Care’s facilities since April 1.
This situation has caused significant challenges for many in mid-Missouri. Some patients have switched to other providers, resulting in increased traffic at Boone Health and SSM Health in Jefferson City, both of which have seen a rise in patient numbers this spring. Others have traveled long distances to seek care in cities like Kansas City and St. Louis.
For those with ongoing medical conditions, there was a chance to apply for “continuity of care.” This allows some patients to maintain in-network benefits temporarily and continue seeing their current doctors while searching for alternatives. However, this solution is short-lived. Anthem stated that continuity of care could last until June 29, based on the specific health needs of each patient.
The discussions between Anthem and MU Health Care have been contentious. Anthem claims that MU Health Care demanded a 39% rate increase over three years, which MU Health Care disputes. Tonya Johnson, MU’s Chief Operating Officer, clarifies that the proposed 39% increase was MU’s initial offer, but they later presented a lower rate in negotiations.
On Monday, the Insurance and Banking Committee will hear testimonies from both MU Health Care and Anthem. The meeting starts at 1 p.m. in the Senate Lounge.
