Essential Update: Indian Railways Increases Passenger Fares from July 1 – Discover New Ticket Prices, Tatkal Rules, and Key Details!

The Ministry of Railways in India has officially updated passenger train fares. Starting from July 1, 2025, this is the first fare increase since 2020. The change aims to make railway operations financially sustainable.

The new fares, shared by the Indian Railway Conference Association (IRCA), include small increases for different classes:

• Non-AC Classes (Long-Distance): Fares will rise by 1 paisa per kilometer.
• Second Class (Non-AC): A hike of 0.5 paisa per kilometer will apply only to journeys over 500 km; there’s no change for shorter trips.

For longer distances:

• 501–1500 km: ₹5 increase
• 1501–2500 km: ₹10 increase

• 2501–3000 km: ₹15 increase

• Sleeper and First Class (Non-AC): A 0.5 paisa per kilometer increase.
• Air-Conditioned Classes: Costs will rise by 2 paise per kilometer for classes like AC Chair Car, AC 2-Tier, and Executive Class. This includes premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and Vande Bharat.

Notably, prices for suburban travel and monthly season tickets will stay the same. Also, tickets booked before July 1 will not be affected by these changes.

Aadhaar Verification for Bookings

From July 1, only users with Aadhaar verification will be able to book Tatkal tickets online. This measure aims to cut down on fraudulent bookings. Starting July 15, users will need to authenticate via OTP using their Aadhaar during the booking process.

Final Reservation Chart Update

The Indian Railways is shifting the preparation of final reservation charts to 8 hours before train departure instead of 4 hours. This change aims to help passengers on waiting lists by providing clearer planning.

Upcoming Tech Upgrades

A new passenger reservation system (PRS) will launch in December 2025, designed to handle 1.5 lakh bookings per minute. This upgrade should improve ticketing efficiency.
