Texas State University Makes History: Joining the Pac-12 Conference and Redefining College Sports

Texas State University has taken a big step by accepting an invitation to join the Pac-12 Conference. This decision marks a significant change for the university and its athletic programs, set to take effect on July 1, 2026.

The Pac-12 Board of Directors, including current and future members, voted unanimously to bring Texas State into the fold. Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould expressed her excitement, stating, “It is a new day in college sports, and we’re looking forward to integrating Texas State as a foundational member of the new Pac-12.”

Texas State President Kelly Damphousse called this a historic move for the university, reflecting its growing presence and commitment to excellence. Joining the Pac-12 is expected to boost the university’s visibility and enhance recruitment. It will also improve student-athlete experiences and engage alumni all over the country. This move aligns with Texas State’s aspiration to achieve R1 Carnegie-classified status by 2027, which would elevate its research profile.

Director of Athletics Don Coryell highlighted the benefits of this transition, noting that it presents a unique opportunity to compete at high levels and pursue excellence across various sports. The TXST Bobcats now join a diverse group of teams, including Boise State and San Diego State, as part of the nine foundational members of the newly structured conference.

Historically, Texas State has been part of the Sun Belt Conference since 2013. The team has performed well, winning the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s Cup three out of the last four years and securing back-to-back bowl victories.
